Wabi Corp. to Provide Wear Resistant Castings for De Beers Canada

New Liskeard, Ontario (March 24, 2015) – De Beers Canada Group has contracted Wabi Iron & Steel Corp. to reverse engineer two important wear resistant castings for use in their Victor Mine in Attawapiskat, Ontario. Wabi’s engineering division and pattern shop are working closely together to produce the product drawings for the two different castings.

De Beers Canada operates two diamond mines in Canada. One of these is the Victor Mine, an open pit facility that produces approximately 600,000 carats yearly. Through reverse engineering, Wabi’s specialists will be able to determine the correct dimensions, materials needed, and production operations required to build the needed castings. The process of reverse engineering enables a customer who initially does not have an associated drawing of a specific casting to subsequently acquire a drawing which enables them to access product supply directly from a castings manufacturer.

The Vincent Mine is in need of two castings: the Sizer Top-Cap and the Breaker Block. The Sizer Top-Cap weighs at least 190 pounds and is considered as the initial wear portion of a continuous mining machine; in cases of extreme wear, the tip or the entire top-cap might require replacement. On the other hand, the Breaker Block is a component used in crushing operations; this type of casting is arranged in series on a breaker bar.

For increased wear resistance, Wabi‘s engineers have determined that high-manganese steel is a manufacturing option for both of the wear parts. High-manganese steel is a material known for its endurance as its surface becomes harder over time when in operation; this characteristic would not only improve the resistance quality but would also prolong the life of the castings.

Aside from reverse engineering services and high-grade Ontario foundry products, Wabi Iron & Steel Corp. manufactures state-of-the-art loading and conveyance systems for the mining industry. The company provides skips and cages, mine rail cars, and other heat-resistant products.
